A Devotional Journey Through Bill W.’s Spiritual Experience
When Self‑Will Finally Breaks (Step 1)
“My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart You, God, will not despise.” — Psalm 51:17
There comes a moment in every recovery story when the old tools stop working. The willpower. The promises. The bargaining. The “I’ve got this.”
Bill W. reached that moment in a hospital bed, shaking, defeated, and out of answers. And strangely — that was the beginning of hope.
Because God does His best work in the places where our strength finally runs out.
Reflection: Where is self‑reliance still running the show in your life? What would it look like to let it break — not in shame, but in surrender?
Prayer: God, meet me in the place where my strength ends. Let my breaking become the doorway to Your healing.
When Hope Walks Into the Room (Step 2)
“Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope.” — Zechariah 9:12
Before Bill believed in God, he believed in Ebby — a friend who had found sobriety when no one thought it was possible. Hope didn’t come through a sermon. It came through a changed life.
That’s how God often works in recovery. He sends us people whose eyes say, “If grace could reach me, it can reach you too.”
Reflection: Who has been your “Ebby”? And who might God be preparing for you to encourage?
Prayer: God, open my heart to hope again. Let me see the evidence of Your power in the lives around me.
The Cleansing Light
(Steps 4–9)
“Call to Me and I will answer you.” — Jeremiah 33:3
Bill’s turning point wasn’t polished. It wasn’t religious. It wasn’t dignified.
It was a desperate cry: “If there is a God, let Him show Himself!”
And God did.
Surrender isn’t about having perfect faith. It’s about being willing to stop running.
Reflection: What part of your life is God inviting you to hand over — not partially, but fully?
Prayer: God, I turn my will and my life over to You today. Take what I cannot carry.
The Cry of Surrender (Step 3)
“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” — John 8:32
Bill described a moment of overwhelming peace — a sense that the weight he’d carried for years had finally lifted. But the real transformation came afterward, when he began clearing away the wreckage of his past.
Confession. Honesty. Amends. Cleaning house.
Spiritual awakening isn’t a one‑time event. It’s a process of letting God shine light into every corner of our story.
Reflection: What truth is God inviting you to face — not to shame you, but to free you?
Prayer: God, give me courage to walk into the light. Heal what I’ve hidden. Restore what I’ve broken.
Daily Maintenance
(Steps 10–11)
“Give us this day our daily bread.” — Matthew 6:11
Bill learned quickly that spiritual power fades without spiritual practice. He prayed. He meditated. He examined his heart. He stayed connected.
Recovery isn’t maintained by yesterday’s surrender. It’s renewed one day at a time.
Reflection: What simple daily practice helps you stay connected to God? Where is He inviting you to slow down and listen?
Prayer: God, feed my spirit today. Keep me awake, honest, and connected to You.
The Call to Carry the Message (Step 12)
“Freely you have received; freely give.” — Matthew 10:8
The moment Bill got sober, he wanted to help someone else. Not because he was noble — but because he discovered a truth that still anchors recovery today:
You can’t keep what you don’t give away.
Service isn’t an obligation. It’s oxygen for the soul.
Reflection: Who is God placing on your heart today? Where can your story bring hope?
Prayer: God, use my life to lift someone else. Let my healing become a doorway for another person’s freedom.
